What is smoked meat?

Smoked meat is basically a type of cooked meat item where smoking helps to bro in the much needed woody flavor to the food and mostly plant materials are used for smoking, thereby adding better tastes.

Smoking primarily means cold smoking and it’s done for beef, chicken breast, and pork chops. However, the smoked food items contain the bacteria even after smoking as these are not destroyed until they are exposed to higher temperatures.

Smoking also helps to preserve the natural nutrients in meat. It further breaks down the tough muscle tissue protein, also known as collagen and this makes the meat softer and tender.

Smoking is done in two ways – hot smoking and cold smoking.

Hot smoking

In this process, the food is smoked and cooked in an electric kiln and this is considered a better way of smoking as the health hazards are reduced.

Cold smoking

In this process, the food is smoked at 40 to 140 degrees Fahrenheit over a period of one day. You need to cook the smoked meat to apparently 160° before you eat them. However, consumption of cold smoked meat regularly is not advisable due to the health hazards it can pose.

Having hot smoked food occasionally is perfectly acceptable. If you eat it in excess, it can increase sodium content in your body, which further increases your risk of affecting the kidneys.
